Classie Mae Evans

Our precious loved one is gone, our home is vacant and that void can never be filled.

Classie Mae Evans was born on May 17, 1930, and brought a bundle of joy to the late Mr. John Lewis and the late Mrs. Lela Lewis in Sumter County, Alabama. Later, her mother met and married the late Mr. Malachi Jackson, who became a loving stepfather to her. Mr. Jackson was very influential in her adult life.

Classie attended Dunbar High School and graduated in 1948. Later, she met Clarence Evans, Sr., and they were joined in holy matrimony. Through this union, they had four children.

Her husband, Clarence Evans preceded her in death as well as her grandchildren, Jermaine Jennings, Rosetta McDuffie and Christopher Knox; one great-grandson, Cordarrius Clark and her brother, Malachi Jackson, Jr.

While raising her children, she began to work outside the home in the Dietary Department at University Hospital, presently known as the University of Alabama at Birmingham. To many of the younger ladies, she was a godly example through her leadership. She was a fixture on her job to all that knew her, from administration to the patients. After her retirement from the hospital, she became a domestic engineer for Attorney Glenn and Susan Waldrop, assisting in rearing their two daughters, Audrey Snow and Mary Glenn.

At an early age, Classie made the most important decision in her life, when she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at the New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. Mother Evans made a lifelong commitment to Christ and to New Bethlehem, which was her only church membership.

Classie was a very active church member up until her health started declining, but she remained a financial supporter of the church through tithing and offering. She believed in Sunday School and always attended in her youth and adult years. She was involved in numerous ministries: Bible Study, Minister's Deacons and Trustee Wives, Evangelistic, Love In Action Committee for Emeritus Pastor Walker, Funeral Committee, Funeral Kitchen Committee, where she took pride in serving families of deceased family members. She also served in the Jefferson County Missionary Baptist District Association, as a member of the Usher Ministry and the Deacon and Trustee Wives.

She was a dedicated member, still receiving Communion until her appointed time to leave this strange land to return home to be with the Lord. She was loved by her church family, and she never met a stranger.

Her legacy will continue in the lives of her children and serve as a beacon of light to those that loved her. She exchanged her earthly address to her heavenly home on March 9, 2026, at the home of her son, Joseph (Shirley) Evans.

Mrs. Classie Mae Evans leaves to cherish her memories include: three sons, Clarence, Jr. (Pamela) of Chicago, IL, Jimmy (Thomasina) Knox of Birmingham, AL, Joseph (Shirley) Evans of Bessemer, AL; one daughter, Linda Hutchins of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren, Lawrence Evans, LaJuanda Evans, LaShawnda Williams (Steven), LaTarsha Rainey (Lee), Clarence D.
