DeVera Ann Beckwood Burroughs

Ms. DeVera Ann Beckwood Burroughs was born on September 20, 1949, to the late Mr. Henry Beckwood and Mrs. Annie Beckwood in Bessemer, Alabama. DeVera passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025.

She confessed her love for Christ at an early age.

DeVera was a graduate of Abrams High School class of 1967, where she was an honor student and played the clarinet in band. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing clothing for her siblings and herself. After high school she attended Miles College and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business. While at Miles College, she was selected as one of the women to charter the Delta Eta Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. on December 4, 1970. After she graduated, she accepted a job in the Financial Aid Office at Miles College. A few years later she was employed at Social Security Administration Office in Birmingham for five years and retired from the United States Postal Service after 30 years of service.

Preceded in death by her siblings: Cornelia Smith, John Smith, Tommy Beckwood and Henry Beckwood, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her son, Cornelius Eugene Burroughs, Jr. and daughter, Stephanie Lynn Burroughs; two granddaughters, Ashlyn Nichole Burroughs of New York, NY and Amber Jenise Burroughs; two grandsons, Armon Eugene Burroughs and Ayden Lee Burroughs; three sisters, Laura Jackson, Donna Beckwood and Jennifer Beckwood Woods and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

DeVera was a devoted: mother, granny, sister, aunt and friend, who created a home filled with love, joy and lots of laughter. Her smile will be missed.
