Elijah High

Mr. Elijah High was born to the late Willie and Vianna High and accepted Christ at an early age-a foundation that guided his life of faith, service, and integrity.

A proud graduate of Wenonah High School, Class of 1960, Elijah went on to pursue his passion for mechanics at Bessemer Technical College. His dedication to his country led him to serve honorably in the United States Army and National Guard, where he bravely fought in Operation Desert Storm before receiving an honorable discharge.

Elijah was a seasoned and respected mechanic who held numerous roles throughout his career. He worked faithfully as a crane operator at U.S. Steel and U.S. Pipe and later served as a trusted driver for BFI. No matter the task, Elijah approached his work with diligence, discipline, and excellence.

A devoted Christian, Elijah was a loyal member of Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully until his passing. His commitment to ministry extended across several congregations over the years. At Old St. Paul, he was a member of the Finance Committee and served as a deacon. At Pilgrim Rest Primitive Baptist, he offered his time and heart as both a deacon and member of the Usher Board. His presence in the church was marked by quiet strength and unwavering faith.

Elijah was a man of principle-organized, thoughtful, and consistent. He enjoyed watching sports and cherished meaningful conversations with his sons, Larry, David, and Bruce, and Benny Jr. With a great sense of humor and a deep love for his family, he was a remarkable father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Louise "Cookie" Tubbs-High. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved children Larry (Valerie) High, Sharon Thomas, David (Joy) High, Bruce High, Benjamin (Aidrea) Rainey, and Lisa (Hartford) Long. He was a proud grandfather to thirteen devoted grandchildren and a cherished greatgrandfather to five.

He is also survived by his siblings: Steve High, Willie High, and Victoria (Lewis) Martin, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever honor his life, love, and legacy.
