The month of December is a time of family gatherings and great celebrations, so it was in the home of Ezekiel and Alice Hicks as they welcomed on December 14, 1956, their baby girl whom they named Gail Elizabeth. Gail grew to be smart and talented and was adored by her parents, especially her dad. Because of their relationship she was known by many as a "Daddy's Girl".
Gail grew in the admonition of the Lord. Her parents made sure that she had a firm foundation in the word and an unwavering love for the Lord. At a very young age she was baptized and became a dedicated life-long member of Allen Temple A.M.E. Church under the pastorate of Reverend J. F. Holmes. She served as a Trustee. She served on the Hospitality Ministry and Progressive Christian Women. She also was a member of The United Voices of Allen and the Northwest Alabama Conference Choir.
Gail's parents made sure that she received an enriched education. She graduated in the Class of 1974 from Holy Family High School. She continued her education at Alabama State University. While there, being the fun-loving person that she was, she often referred to herself as one of the "Sensational Stingers" because she loved music and she loved to dance. She later attended Miles College and completed her education at Daniel Payne College, receiving her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Administration. During her college years she was one of 24 young women who participated in the 26th Annual Debutante Cotillion sponsored by the Imperial Club, Inc.
After college "Dragon Lady" as she was lovingly called by her friends, prepared to enter the workforce. She was employed by Cahaba GBA as a Recovery Specialist. In later years the company's name was changed to Cahaba Safeguard/Lydian. In August of 2024, she transferred to Global Connection to Employment (GCTE) where she worked until she became ill.
It can be said that Gail was a giving person with a big heart. Also, she was never lost for words. Matter of fact she was straight-forward and she did not play. She said what she meant and meant what she said. Being a connoisseur of jazz music, Gail frequently attended concerts and festivals in the park. Everyone knew that she loved her "Fur Babies" Ty and Egypt. They were not just her pets they were her family. One could say that she embraced life and took pleasure in living.
Even in her final days, Gail was still Gail. Her infectious laugh, her sharp wit and her take charge spirit was in full force. On Friday, May 16, 2025, God called Gail to her new home in Glory.
Heartwarming memories will be cherished by her loving and devoted goddaughter, Rashida Johnson. Her loyal friend Tiffany Bryant, other family members and countless friends.
