Lewis Long

Lewis Long, Jr. (Duke) was born July 9, 1942, to the late Lewis Long, Sr. and Susie Bell Long,
in Greensboro, Alabama. After the passing of his mother at the tender age of three, Lewis, Sr.,
married the late Flossie Long Alexander and moved to Bessemer where Lewis grew up.
Lewis accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Reverend B.B. Strowder. He was an
active member of the #2 Usher Board until his health began to slow him down.
Lewis was a graduate in the Class of 1962 at J.S. Abrams High School in Bessemer, Alabama. He
attended and took advantage of the vocational trade school where he learned excellent design
skills and became a skilled upholsterer.
After graduating High School, Lewis married his high school sweetheart, Mattie McCampbell; a
covenant made with God that lasted 61 years on Septembre 2, 2023. “Therefore, what God has
joined together, let no one separate.” Mark 10:9
Lewis retired from Stallworth Upholstery and Vinyl, specializing in vinyl convertible car tops. If
you needed your car top replaced, Lewis was the go-to person.
Lewis was a caring, passionate and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Not only
did he raise his children, but his grandchildren, great grandchildren and family members that
needed a helping hand. He had an open-door policy.
He and his wife were known for feeding those who were hungry and in need of shelter. Family
and friends described him as a tough gentle giant, who loved telling jokes and stories to make
people smile. Also, Lewis loved himself some Nicket Boo (his wife) and his family, and don’t
forget his MONEY.
His presence will be greatly missed. His memory will be cherished in the hearts and minds of
those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis, Sr., Susie Long and Flossie Long Alexander;
grandsons, Lewis Hamilton and Willie Burrough; brother, Nathan Long; sisters, Leola Gentle,
Helen Green and Gwendolyn Alexander.
He leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife, Mattie Long; four sons, James (Meshelia)
Long, Christopher (Darlene) Long, Lewis, III (Chyeryl) Long and Marlon (Isha) Long, all of
Bessemer, AL; one daughter, Latonya (Mark) Long of Bessemer, AL; one sister-in-law, Bobbie
Jean Lacey; four sisters, Ada Cowins of St. Louis, MO, Irma (Harold) Wright of Birmingham,
AL, Tondry (James) Wright, and Louise Alexander of Bessemer, AL; four brothers, Edward
(Sherrie) Long of Miami, FL, William (Fredericka) Long, Herman Alexander, Jr. and Tyrone
Alexander of Bessemer, AL; twenty grandchildren, thirty-one great grandchildren, one Godson,
Andre Collier and a host of other relatives and friends.
