Mary Joyce Boyd was born, Mary Joyce Simon, on February 11, 1956, to the parents of Joe Simon and Betty Louise Simon at Bessemer General Hospital. The first-born daughter of nine children after five sons.
Mary found GOD early in life and was a devoted Methodist throughout her life as it helped shape her upbringing.
Mary grew up in Bessemer where she attended the Bessemer City School system and completed high school at Jess Lanier High in 1974. Focused on higher education, Mary attended Lawson State Community College and then transferred to University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Radiology.
After finishing college, Mary obtained a job working at UAB Hospital in Downtown Birmingham as a Radiology Technician. She worked her way up from being a Technician to a Supervisor. As she came closer to retirement, she became a Technician again and assisted wherever she was needed. In total, Mary dedicated 37 years in the UAB Health System.
During her life, Mary found love with Billy Boyd in 1980, and they engaged in a 4-year courtship before finally tying the knot on June 27, 1984. As part of their marriage, they had two sons, William Michael and Terrance Derell Boyd. Mary was a stepmother to three of Billy's other children, La'Keea, Keenan, and Khadijah, and treated them as her own.
After retirement, Mary devoted herself more to the church, becoming a part of the Women Ministry and took on the role of Stewardship at Unity Methodist C.M.E. church.
On August 11, 2025, she was called home after 69 years of life and 41 years of marriage. She is survived by her husband, sons, 4 siblings, James Simon, Larry Simon, Betty Simon, and Glenda Simon (Horn), a host of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. She will always be loved, greatly missed, and most of all, never forgotten.
