Raymond Edward Hill affectionately known as “Ray” was born May 20, 1949, to Julius and
Thelma Hill in Gary, Indiana. He is a former resident of Gary/Valparaiso, Indiana and most
recently resided in McCalla, Alabama.
At an early age, he accepted Jesus as his personal Savior and was a former member of the First
A.M.E Church in Gary, Indiana. He also attended Cornerstone Community Church in Hobart,
Indiana. He was committed in his relationship with Christ and received several certificates from
the Moody Bible Institute, located in Chicago, Illinois and facilitated numerous Bible Study
sessions in all of his church affiliations.
He was a 1968 graduate of Emerson High School. Upon graduating, he served a brief stint in
the United State Navy, located in the Great Lakes Region. Upon returning to his hometown
in Gary, Indiana, he pursued a career in the Insurance Industry. He received his Chartered
Life Underwriter designation from Purdue University and later became an Insurance Agent
for several insurance companies including John Hancock and Allstate. Ray worked for
Allstate for over 30 years and upon his retirement, he decided to re-enter the workforce as an
Insurance Broker, operating under the “Ray Hill Agency”. He had a strong passion for providing
individuals with advice on various insurance products, and also enjoyed working with kids and
later worked as a part-time custodian at the Union Township School system.
Ray was an avid car enthusiast (particularly Corvairs) and was a former member of the Chicago
Corvair Enthusiast Club. Anyone who knew Ray personally was also welcomed by his infectious
smile, sense of humor, love of music and referred to him as “Handsome Hill” given his smooth,
suave, and sophisticated attire.
Ray departed this life on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at his home surrounded by family and
close friends.
He was loved by his family and was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Thelma Hill;
daughter, Tamera Rembert; ten siblings, Dorothy, Ruth Ann, Barbara Jean, Carolyn, Freddie,
Richard, Julius, Jr., Bruce, Marvin, and Robert.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Sandra Hill; daughter, Rayna (Mike)
Hawthorne; two granddaughters, Brittany and Kennedy; three great granddaughters, Milia,
Mia and Madison; loving sisters, Joan Corbin of University Park, IL, Joyce Carey of Porter, IN
and Gladys Hutch of Albuquerque, NM. Ray was blessed to have brothers and sisters in love,
Gertrude (Albert) Williams, Rotunda Rembert, Douglas Rembert, Tyrone Rembert and
Reginald (Ida) Rembert and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and close
friends all who cherished each moment spent with him.
