"I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you myself, that where I am, there ye may be also. John 14:2-3
On June 28, 2020, Jesus came and led Sister Veeda Agatha Ross Varner to her heavenly mansion that he had promised her.
Veeda was born on August 19, 1952 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Cleveland and Sarah Ross. She confessed her faith in Christ at the age of 11 years old under the pastorate of the late Rev. Dr. E.W. Williams of First Baptist Church in Fairfield, Alabama. In the Ross household, church was very important and served as the hub for all social activities including youth meetings, Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, Girl Scout meetings, and choir rehearsals. Veeda was a product of St. Mary’s Catholic School, Robinson Elementary and Fairfield Jr. High School. After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1971, she attended Miles College, where she obtained a bachelors degree in Social Science in 1974. At a young age, she exhibited a passion for life and always uplifted everyone’s spirits with her words of wisdom. She always thought of others before herself, showing kindness to everyone she encountered including a young doctor named Clyde Varner.
On January 27, 1985, Veeda was united in holy matrimony to Dr. Varner and shared 35 years of marriage until her death. Unto this union were born three beautiful children: Nicole Alana Varner J.D., Dr. Clyde Roderick Varner, PhD., and Brandon Varner.
Veeda devoted her life to caring for her children, as well as the hundreds of children in the state of Alabama’s child welfare system where she advocated on their behalf as a social worker with the State of Alabama’s Department of Human Resources. As a social worker, her top priority was to ensure the children under her care were provided with every opportunity and daily necessity within reach, even offering to provide for them at her own expense. During the Christmas holiday, she took pride in making sure each child under her watch received every item on their wish list. Once she retired from her profession, she dedicated her life to studying the word of God, traveling, a lot of shopping, and relishing in the time spent with her family and friends.
Veeda was preceded in death by her parents, Cleveland and Sarah Ross; her grandparents, Sam and Mary Ross, Mary Miller and John Percy Ricks; and her brother George Cleveland Ross (Sonny). Loving and caring memories will forever be cherished by her beautiful family, including her beloved husband, Dr. Clyde Varner; daughter, Nicole Varner; sons Clyde and Brandon Varner; brothers, Milton R. (Doris) Ross, Percy (Miriam) Ross and Clarence (Alfredia) Ross; sister, Annese (Thomas) Jackson; aunt, Ella Ross, uncle, John (Rose) Ricks; niece and Goddaughter, Sara (Jeremy) Cade; nephews, Milton Ross Jr., Jeffery (Sharon) Ross, T.J Jackson and Brian Jackson; nieces, Wanda Ezozo and Kimberly Cab; and very special friends, Pamela Orr, Glory Abercrombie, Angela Lewis and Stanley Lewis along with a host of friends and family members.
